Capitals clinch No. 1 seed in Eastern Conference

The Philadelphia Flyers gained a point for lasting past regulation tonight in Buffalo, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Washington from clinching the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference for the second straight year.

The Capitals will face either the New York Rangers or the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

Carolina controls its own destiny in the battle for the eighth seed. If the Rangers lose to New Jersey tomorrow afternoon in regulation or if the Hurricanes beat Tampa Bay tomorrow night, the Capitals get a first-round matchup with their Southeast Division foe.
