Capitals won’t sign 2010 draft pick Samuel Carrier

The Capitals have elected not to sign 2010 draft pick Samuel Carrier, thereby relinquishing their rights to the defensive prospect, according to a team spokesman.

Carrier, who will be eligible for the 2012 draft, was a sixth-round selection (176th overall) by Washington. In 2011-12 season, Carrier appeared in 51 games with Baie-Comeau Drakker of the QMJHL recording 13 goals, 30 assists, 45 penalty minutes and a minus-4 rating.

Meantime, the Capitals retain the rights to forward Taylor Stefishen for one more year, according to a team spokesman, because the prospect elected to go to college.

The Capitals acquired Stefishen, a fifth-round choice in the 2010 draft by Nashville, last summer in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2013 draft. If Washington signs Stefishen, it would send its seventh-round selection in 2013 to Nashville. If not, the Capitals retain the pick.
