The Capitals placed Mike Green on the long-term injured list Thursday with the defenseman sidelined once again with a groin injury. With no apparent timetable of when Green would be ready to return to the lineup, Coach Dale Hunter said the timing worked out to place the two-time Norris Trophy finalist on LTI.
According to the collective bargaining agreement, Green cannot be taken off the long-term list until he misses 10 games and 24 days, which means the earliest he could possibly be back in the mix for the Capitals is Feb. 1.
Whether the defenseman will be ready by that date is unclear, though. The fact that Green hasn’t skated since leaving mid-way through the game against San Jose on Jan. 7 when he aggravated his groin, cannot be considered a positive sign.
“Well, we didn’t expect him to — right now his strength is not good enough so with the all star game coming up in days or something,” Hunter said. “Timing is everything and with the all star break he’ll have lots of time to get it stronger.”
