Dennis Wideman expected to miss first round of playoffs

Coach Bruce Boudreau said he’s “gotta believe” that Dennis Wideman will miss at least the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Exactly how much time the defenseman will miss while he recovers from a leg hematoma and compartment syndrome, though, is still far from certain.

“We don’t know,” Boudreau said when asked if there was any timeline for Wideman’s return. “It’s one of those things that, again, this time next week we’ll know a lot more than we know now, but it depends on how his rehab goes and how quick he takes to it.”

Wideman suffered the hematoma after he was hit by Carolina’s Tuomo Ruutu, knee-to-thigh on March 29 with 4:56 remaining in the second period of that game.

Boudreau said he didn’t know if Wideman was still in the hospital or at home resting, but yesterday, General Manager George McPhee said that he expected the defensemen would be discharged at some point this week.

“He’s a guy that’s used to playing an awful lot of hockey games and I gotta believe when he’s allowed to go back, full at it, it won’t take long for him to get there,” Boudreau added, “but right now he’s still not doing much.”
