John Erskine won’t be suspended for hit on Trevor Daley

Captals defenseman John Erskine will not be suspended or fined for his hit on Dallas' Trevor Daley, according to an NHL spokesman.

With 4 minutes and 22 seconds elapsed in the second period of the Capitals’ 5-2 loss to the Stars on Tuesday night, Daley appeared to fall just as Erskine hit him. The Dallas defenseman’s head appeared to take the brunt of the initial contact, which is a benchmark for hits that receive supplementary discipline from the NHL. Daley was slow to get up but ultimately finished the game.

Erskine was given a two-minute minor penalty for boarding and after the game said he didn’t intend to target Daley’s head.

“I went to go hit him,” Erskine said Tuesday night. “I went to go hit him; I know the guy so I wasn’t going in intending to do a head shot or anything.”
