Mark Stuart fined $2,500 for hit on Marcus Johansson

Winnipeg’s Mark Stuart avoided a suspension for his hit on Marcus Johansson on Friday night. Instead, the Jets defenseman has been dealt a $2,500 fine, which happens to be the maximum amount allowed under the collective bargaining agreement.

The incident occurred midway through the first period behind the Winnipeg goal, where Johansson was drilled by Stuart, who appeared to use his forearm to crunch Johansson’s head into the boards. Johansson lost his helmet because of the impact and missed a portion of the second period; no penalty was called on the play.

The NHL described the hit as “interference” and said the supplemental discipline was for a “late hit.”
