Although Coach Dale Hunter wouldn’t confirm who would be the Capitals’ starting goaltender Monday night when they host the San Jose Sharks, it appears likely that Michal Neuvirth will get the nod.
Neuvirth made a surprise start on Sunday against the New York Rangers when Tomas Vokoun fell ill with the flu. If the veteran doesn’t feel well enough to play, it would make sense that Neuvirth faces the Sharks at Verizon Center.
Vokoun is “better but it’s one of those things that tonight will be a game-time decision,” said Hunter, who added that the Capitals have not determined whether they will recall a goaltender. “We’ll decide that when I talk to [Vokoun] later.”
Should Neuvirth make a second consecutive start it will mark the first time he has done so since he started games back on Dec. 23 and 26th.
Vokoun did not take part in the optional skate at KCI but was at the practice facility this morning, according to a team spokesman. When the Capitals visited the Sharks on Jan. 7, Vokoun made 34 saves in a 5-2 loss.
