Nicklas Backstrom not taking part in Capitals’ morning skate

Nicklas Backstrom is not on the ice for the start of the morning skate here in San Jose and after two days of optimism it looks like the center’s status for Saturday’s game is questionable at best.

Backstrom, 24, was elbowed in the jaw by Calgary’s Rene Bourque on Tuesday but skated each of the past two days and said on Friday that he felt ready for a game. It’s unclear if Backstrom’s status changed or if the Capitals are playing it safe with one of the team’s franchise pillars.

Everyone else is on the ice for the skate at HP Pavilion. Based on the line rushes the Capitals are using this morning, here’s what the lineup will likely shake out if Backstrom doesn’t face the Sharks.

Ovechkin-Laich-Brouwer
Semin-Johansson-Knuble
Chimera-Halpern-Ward
Hendricks-Perreault-Beagle

More to come after the skate.
