Numbers bode well for Mike Green’s recovery after surgery

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS | The Capitals announced Monday that Mike Green will undergo abominal surgery, sidelining the top defenseman for four to six weeks.

League injury reports show 63 abdominal injuries were disclosed since the 1982-83 season. A majority of those reported occur in December (19), almost as many as those revealed in the subsequent months combined (20).

Of the 63 reported abdominal injuries, 13 were blueliners, and while that may be an unlucky number, the news when it comes to recovery is encouraging.

Defensemen with disclosed abdominal injuries since 1982-83 season
GP TOI Points
Season before injury 50 958 28
Year of injury 51 1094 23
Season after injury 62 1322 32

Using the year before the injury as a baseline, defensemen saw their games played increase by more than 25 percent from their baseline during the season following the disclosure of the injury. In addition, they experienced a 38 percent bump in time on ice and 15 percent more points over the course of the season.

Skaters as a whole saw a 7 percent increase in games played, along with a 20 percent increase in time on ice and nearly a 10 percent increase in points scored.

In other words, statistically, it looks like there could be a full recovery ahead for Mike Green.
