Washington Capitals training camp has begun at Kettler Capitals Iceplex, with players skating on both ice surfaces. Right now Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Mike Knuble, all in red jerseys, are among those skating with Group A on the main sheet under the watchful eye of Coach Bruce Boudreau.
Starting goalie Semyon Varlamov also is on the ice after warming up approximately half an hour before other players. Goalie Brandon Anderson joined Varlamov earlier this morning to loosen up. Both those goalies are part of Group A.
The veterans mostly will be skating on the main sheet closest to the locker room, where fans waited for Ovechkin, among others, to emerge. As Ovechkin made his way to the ice, fans began shouting "Ovie" in hopes of getting his attention and perhaps an autograph.
Roughly several hundred Capitals enthusiasts are watching the start of training camp on the main surface, although there are two additional sessions today, and more fans are expected to attend those as the day progresses.
