Washington Capitals may have new radio play-by-play voice in 2011-12

It’s possible Capitals radio play-by-play announcer of 14 seasons, Steve Kolbe, may not be back in the broadcast booth next season. The team has elected to create and publicly list a new position of Director of Radio Broadcasting and whoever fills that role will also do the team’s play-by-play.

From a team spokesman: “We have expanded the scope and responsibilities associated with the Capitals radio play-by-play role to a new, full-time position.”

Kolbe, who has announced Capitals games since 1997-98 season, will be able to apply for the job and could remain the team’s play-by-play voice in the new capacity. Kolbe called his 1,000th NHL game during the 2010-11 campaign.
