Mike Green skates briefly; Brooks Laich and Marcus Johansson not at practice

February 19, 2013

After taking Monday off, the Capitals are back practicing at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex on Tuesday morning. Washington had its three-game winning streak snapped on Sunday by the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden and doesn’t play again until welcoming the Devils to town on Thursday night.

That three-day break ties the team’s longest in the shortened season, and it won’t enjoy another such stint for more than a month. Even after posting three straight victories, the Capitals remain in last place in the Eastern Conference at 5-9-1 with a tough stretch upcoming that starts with back-to-back home games against New Jersey, which is tied with Pittsburgh for the conference lead with 22 points.

Today, forwards Brooks Laich (groin) and Marcus Johansson (upper body) are the only players unaccounted for on the ice. The group includes defenseman Jack Hillen, who has not played since sustaining an upper-body injury in the season-opener at Tampa Bay.

Defenseman Mike Green (lower body) appeared briefly late in practice to seemingly test out his injury, skating in a blue Capitals sweatshirt with a red backwards hat as the team pushed through conditioning drills. He stepped off the ice after about five minutes and watched the rest of practice from the bench.

Green suffered his injury during Washington’s victory at Tampa Bay last Thursday and missed his first game of the year on Sunday when the team fell in 2-1 loss to the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. He skated at Saturday morning’s practice for about 15 minutes but has not been seen on the ice since.

Johansson has not played since Feb. 7. The third-year center has recorded one goal in nine games.

Laich has been skating regularly for almost three weeks, but he still hasn’t made his debut. On Saturday, he called the injury, which he suffered in November playing in Switzerland, “very frustrating.”

Here’s what the lineup looked like in practice today, which was unchanged from Sunday’s game:

Forwards
Chimera-Ribeiro-Ovechkin
Wolski-Backstrom-Brouwer
Fehr-Perreault-Ward
Hendricks-Beagle-Crabb

Defense
Alzner-Kundratek
Erskine-Carlson
Schultz-Poti

Stay tuned for updates after today’s workout.
