The Capitals host New Jersey tonight for the first of two games that will take place just 41 hours apart between the two teams at Verizon Center. Washington will be without defenseman Mike Green, who is nursing a lower-body injury, for a second straight game.
Braden Holtby (4-5-0, 3.68 goals-against average, .888 save percentage) will make his fifth consecutive start for Washington while the Devils will go with seemingly ageless Martin Brodeur, who with a 7-2-3 record, 2.29 GAA and .912 save percentage at age 40 continues to defy the odds.
Capitals Coach Adam Oates spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach in New Jersey and was able to see first hand and truly appreciate how the future hall-of-famer works during the course of a season.
“He’s a very smart guy. He knows his position, he knows all the positions. He knows the game. And you see it in all sorts of times where you’re like ‘Oh, yeah. He actually does know stuff,'” Oates said. “It’s just kind of his personality, he’s a little casual so you kind of forget that. But I would say, for me, the calmness he brought every single day was important to the team and his IQ.”
