The Capitals recalled goaltender Philipp Grubauer from the AHL’s Hershey Bears Wednesday because Michal Neuvirth is sick, the team announced.

Grubauer, 21, is expected to back up Braden Holtby Wednesday night as the Capitals take on the Flyers at Wells Fargo Center in the second of back-to-back games. The Capitals’ top goaltending prospect, Grubauer is 6-4-1 with a .928 save percentage and 2.10 goals-against average with Hershey this season.

The matchup with Philadelphia would be Holtby’s eighth consecutive start, a streak that dates back to Feb. 9. Holtby, 23, is 5-2-0 with a .937 save percentage in that span as he anchors the Capitals much like he did last year in the postseason.

For Adam Oates, it’s been an easy decision to stick with Holtby. The Capitals coach has come to appreciate Holtby’s approach to the game through the first few weeks of the season.

“I really like the fire that he has. It looks he wants to play every single night, it looks like he wants that responsibility,” Oates said earlier this week. “It looks like he wants it and that he’s hungry for it. That’s a good feeling to see a guy that even when it hasn’t gone his way, it looks like he still wants to be there.”
