Open thread: Capitals at Jets

Eric Fehr had a forgettable last season with his hometown team, the Winnipeg Jets. Hampered by injury, he played only 35 games, recorded only three points and the Jets didn’t even tender him a qualifying offer as a restricted free agent.

He returns to Winnipeg this afternoon to play in front of family and friends under a different set of circumstances. Fehr (4 goals, 3 assists) is off to a strong start with the Capitals, skating on the second line and admitted there are some mixed emotions heading into his first appearance at MTS Centre since leaving the Jets.

‘It’s obviously a real interesting feeling, going back to my hometown and [facing] the team that I played for last year,” Fehr said. “You’ve got to try to look at it like just another game but it obviously doesn’t feel like one.”

MTS Centre is small arena, with capacity of just over 15,000 for NHL games but it has arguably the most vocal crowd presence of any city in the league. Combine that with the fact that the Jets have scored in the opening five minutes in five of their last six games and it’s particularly important that the Capitals get off to a stronger start than they did Wednesday against Philadelphia.

“They have had quick starts and this building, it will be rocking,” Coach Adam Oates said. “We have to be ready for it right away.”
