Open thread: Capitals at Senators

While the Ottawa Senators want to focus on their game plan not anything about their opponent, they can’t help but focus on ways to try and contain Alex Ovechkin.

The Capitals star left wing has 19 goals and 28 points in the past 18 games and has been held without a point only twice in that span. Ottawa captain Daniel Alfredsson is well aware of the challenge his team faces in attempting to keep Ovechkin in check.

“We definitely have to play our game but you have to know when he’s on the ice,” Alfredsson said. “It’s tough, he gets his shot off so quick he just needs two tenths of a second and it’s a great scoring chance. Our defense has to be alert tonight and forwards has to be tracking back really hard and putting pressure on him, don’t give him too much time.”

In 27 career appearances against the Senators, Ovechkin has 18 goals and 16 assists.

While Thursday night they’ll be pitted against each other as opponents, Alfredsson can appreciate how Ovechkin’s recent surge has helped to propel the Capitals into a playoff position and put him into consideration for the Hart Trophy.

Pittsburgh’s Sidney “Crosby was a no brainer until he got injured again and look at the way Ovechkin’s playing now,” Alfredsson said of the MVP race. “The way he’s turned things around for his team it’s impressive.”
