2013 NHL Draft updates: Capitals take Andre Burakovsky with 23rd pick

June 30, 2013

(Bill Kostroun/Associated Press) Caps’ first-round pick Andre Burakovsky.

Update 9:59 p.m.: The Capitals selected Medicine Hat defenseman Tyler Lewington with their final pick of the 2013 draft, 204th overall. That’s all for the live blog tonight as the draft wraps up, but be sure to check back later tonight for more on the Capitals’ interest in Vincent Lecavalier and our full draft story in tomorrow’s paper.

Update 9:25 p.m.: Washington selected center Brian Pinho in the sixth round with the 174th pick. A Massachusetts native, Pinho is a Providence recruit.

Update 9:08 p.m.: Catching up on a previous trade, Winnipeg acquired Michael Frolik from Chicago for two picks — a third (74) and fifth (134). While the Stanley Cup Champions shipped out Frolik and Bolland on Sunday, they also re-signed playoff performer Bryan Bickell to a four-year, $16 million deal.

Update 8:58 p.m.: With the 144th overall pick the Capitals took defenseman Blake Heinrich. He’s a Minnesota-Duluth recruit but Heinrich is expected to spend one more year in the USHL with Souix City.

Update 7:31 p.m.: The Capitals moved up, acquiring the 61st overall pick from Winnipeg. In return, the Jets receive picks in the third (84), fourth (114) and fifth (127) rounds of the draft. With the newly-acquired selection, Washington chose forward Zachary Sanford (6-3, 168 pounds) who has committed to Boston College.

Update 7:10 p.m.: The Capitals selected Canadian defenseman Madison Bowey with the 53rd overall pick. Bowey, 18, played for the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets and recorded 12 goals and 18 assists in 69 games during the 2012-13 season.

Update 6:51 p.m.: Andre Burakovsky had just wrapped up his first few interviews after being drafted Sunday night when Capitals PR director Sergey Kocharov walked over and handed him a phone. It was Alex Ovechkin, calling to congratulate Burakovsky on being drafted and welcome him to the organization. It was a neat moment as Burakovsky stood grinning as he told Ovechkin how excited he was to join the Caps.

Burakovsky, 18, is still a few years away from the NHL. He estimated he wouldn’t be ready to make the jump for at least another two years.

“I will work hard every day to work to get to Washington’s team,” Burakovsky said. “I think about two years I will be ready, but I have to work hard every day.”

Coach Adam Oates met with reporters at the conclusion of the first round. He was involved in Washington’s meeting with impending unrestricted free agent center Vincent Lecavalier Saturday and I’ll have more on that on the blog later this evening after filing a story for the early dead-tree edition.

Update 6:42 p.m.: Toronto has acquired forward Dave Bolland, who scored the Stanley Cup winning goal for the Blackhawks less than a week ago. In exchange, Chicago receives the 51st and 117th picks in today’s draft along with a fourth-round choice in 2014.

Update 6:24 p.m.: In a swap of defensemen, Carolina sent Jamie McBain to Buffalo for Andrej Sekera and the 35th overall pick.

Update 5:57 p.m.: With the 23rd overall pick, the Capitals selected winger Andre Burakovsky. Listed at 6-1, 176 pounds Burakovsky was ranked fifth among European skaters available in the draft according to NHL Central Scouting.

Born in Austria while his father Robert was playing hockey there, Burakovsky grew up in Sweden and is working his way up through their developmental leagues and national teams. In 2012-13, Burakovsky recorded four goals and seven assists in 43 games for Malmo in the second-tier Swedish league.

Update 4:55 p.m.: Detroit traded the 18th overall pick to San Jose for the 20th and 58th selections in today’s draft. Speaking of the Sharks, earlier in the day they acquired the rights to impending RFA Tyler Kennedy from Pittsburgh for a second-round pick (50).

Update 4:00 p.m.: New Jersey rocks the house by trading the ninth overall pick to Vancouver for goaltender Cory Schneider. It’s a heck of a move by the Devils, who now have a clear heir to Martin Brodeur’s throne. Many believe Roberto Luongo was looking for a fresh start, so it should be interesting to see how it works with him as the No. 1 netminder in Vancouver again.

Update 3:55 p.m.: In the first trade of the draft, the Islanders have acquired gritty winger Cal Clutterbuck, an impending RFA, and a third-round pick (70) in today’s draft from Minnesota in exchange for winger Nino Niederreiter.

Update 3:47 p.m.: Darnell Nurse, who is the nephew of former Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb, was selected seventh overall by the Edmonton Oilers. The 6 foot 3, 185 pound defenseman told reporters earlier this week that he likes to model his game after Nashville’s Shea Weber — not a bad role model.

Update 3:30 p.m.: After Florida took Aleksander Barkov with the No. 2 pick and Tampa Bay chose Jonathan Drouin third, there was some question as to how far defenseman Seth Jones might fall in the first round. Nashville made the obvious choice with the fourth-overall pick, though, by selecting the top-rated blueliner. Seth Jones is the son of former Wizards forward and current Brooklyn Nets assistant coach Popeye Jones.

Update 3:14 p.m.: So the Avalanche brass weren’t bluffing when they declared, repeatedly, over the past several days that they would take center Nathan MacKinnon with the first overall pick. MacKinnon is expected to jump straight into the NHL.

Greetings from the Prudential Center in Newark, where the start of the 2013 NHL Draft is rapidly approaching. It should be an eventful afternoon, not only for the prospects but also as we see whether a week’s worth of trade rumblings result in any significant deals.

As things stand now, the Capitals hold eight selections including the 23rd overall pick. As trade talk reaches a boiling point with all 30 teams in one room, though, will General Manager George McPhee jump in the fray to improve the team that will be on the ice in 2013-14? Time will tell, but as discussed in today’s print edition McPhee has made draft-day deals each of the past five seasons.

Washington holds the 23rd overall selection in the first round, 53rd in the second, 84th in the third, 114 in the fourth, 127th and 144th in the fifth, 174th in the sixth and 204th in the seventh.

The draft starts at 3 p.m. and is being broadcast on the NBC Sports Network. For a full list of every selection in the draft, check out NHL.com.

I’ll post updates as the Capitals make their picks and as any big trades occur around the league, so be sure to stay tuned throughout the afternoon and evening. Updates will be added in reverse chronological order.
