It was a good night to be Ovi indeed. Alex Ovechkin recorded the third four-goal game of his career and first since Jan. 31, 2008, to propel Washington to its 6-5 shootout win Tuesday night over the Tampa Bay Lightning. In doing so, he became just the third player to score four goals in a game this season (Dallas’s Tyler Seguin and San Jose’s Tomas Hertl are the others), recorded his 13th career hat trick and became the Capitals’ all-time leading power play goal scorer.
Without any further delay, here are the videos for each of Ovechkin’s four goals.
Goal No. 1: Even strength, 14:15 of the first from Nicklas Backstrom to make the game 3-1.
“It kind of gave us the life we needed,” Karl Alzner said. “We came in and we were talking about there’s tons of game left, just take it slow it will be fine…We were happy we got that, if we didn’t get that it could have gotten ugly.”
Goal No. 2: Power play, 16:38 of the second from Marcus Johansson and Backstrom to make the game 4-3.
Goal No. 3: Power play, 18:48 of the second from Mike Green and Backstrom to make the score 4-4. This was the goal on which Ovechkin surpassed Peter Bondra as the Capitals’ all-time leader in power play goals with 138.
Goal No. 4: Even strength, 19:27 of the third from John Carlson and Backstrom to make the score 5-5 and force overtime.
“He’s a pure sniper,” Coach Adam Oates said. “The fourth goal, with the ice conditions at that time, the length of the pass the weight on the pass that’s an incredible shot. That’s why he’s a superstar.”
As for the big jump celebration, Ovechkin said ”I just felt it, nothing what I want to do or not. I just felt it.”
