UNIONDALE, N.Y. – The Capitals earned a 4-3 shootout win over the Islanders Saturday night but lost Mike Green to what the team will only describe as an undisclosed upper-body injury in the process.
After a shorthanded shift that ended with 1:44 remaining in the first period, Green didn’t return to the contest. While the nature of Green’s injury is uncertain, he did block a shot by Travis Hamonic during that final shift and earlier in the first period he was the recipient of several big hits.
Green absorbed heavy checks from Matt Martin, Anders Lee and John Persson but the most rattling appeared to be a collision with his own teammate.
While on the power play, roughly seven minutes into the contest, Green and Jason Chimera crossed paths and ran into each other right in front of the Capitals’ net. They teammates saw each other at the last second and were able to pull up slightly, but Chimera still sported several stitches above his right eye following the incident.
Coach Adam Oates said the injury didn’t occur when Green and Chimera collided, but just prior to the intermission.
Still, it was the second time in 10 days that two Capitals have collided. On March 25 against Los Angeles, Alex Ovechkin and Jack Hillen collided and the defenseman hasn’t played since.
