Latest Capitals free agency rumors, updates

Settling in for the day from Kettler Capitals Iceplex, ground zero for Washington’s operations once free agency kicks off at noon on Tuesday. Updates will come periodically, mostly in the form of embedded tweets.

Here’s the story so far on Tuesday:

>> MacLellan will be made available at 6:30 p.m. at Kettler.

>> Things seem to be dying down after all that action earlier, but the Matt Niskanen remains unsigned. The Capitals are making Justin Peters available at 4:30 p.m. and Brooks Orpik at 5 p.m., both via teleconference. General manager Brian MacLellan’s speaking time is still being determined, but it won’t come before 6 p.m.

The agent for Matt Niskanen said a deal is coming soon. The Capitals have been linked as serious contenders, though after signing Orpik they have only $6.2 million left in cap space.

One former Capitals player has struck a deal …

>> The Capitals have agreed to a five-year deal worth $5.5 million annually with defenseman Brooks Orpik, a 33-year-old who has spent his entire career with the Penguins. He reunites with Todd Reirden, his blue-line coach in Pittsburgh, who is now an assistant under Barry Trotz in Washington. His last contract had an annual cap hit of $3.75 million. >> The Capitals have agreed to terms with goaltender Justin Peters, formerly of the Carolina Hurricanes. It’s a two-year deal worth $950,000 per season. More to come.
