Trotz explains sending Nate Schmidt to Hershey for two games and recalling Steve Oleksy in the interim.
“I have to get back to where I was before, when I was playing my better hockey at the beginning of the year,” the young defenseman said.
The Capitals' coach gave similar explanations for each move involving a young skater: "You have to give them a little jolt.”
No team was worse last season -- or over the past three, for that matter -- in low-scoring games than the Capitals.
“I’m a day-by-day guy after what happened with me last year,” Schmidt said.
Jay Beagle was still absent, though Green, Latta and Schmidt all expressed hope in returning for the preseason finale.
Schmidt appeared in 29 games with the Capitals last season as an undrafted free agent.
