Dana Altman’s quotes critical of Cavs were made up by hackers, Oregon officials say

A hacker compromised the Oregon athletic department’s Web site Sunday night, made up quotes and then attributed them to Ducks men’s basketball coach Dana Altman, according to Oregon school officials.

For roughly 30 minutes Sunday night, quotes purportedly from Altman were published on Oregon’s athletics Web site following Virginia’s 67-54 road win over the Ducks that were critical of both Cavaliers fifth-year senior forward Mike Scott and of the Virginia defense.

“An outside source compromised and hacked the Web site,” said Chris Geraghty, Oregon’s assistant director of media services. “The controversial quotes were not made [Sunday] night by Dana Altman.”

The Web site was hacked again Monday morning, Geraghty said. The Web page in which Oregon’s postgame quotes originally were published has since been taken down altogether.

Among the quotes falsely attributed to Altman were:

On Scott, who tallied 17 points and 13 rebounds against Oregon: “All-ACC? I wasn't that impressed. Our defense was poor, and we didn't block out well. The way we played, that stat line doesn't surprise me. Nice hair, though.”

On Virginia’s defense: “We have to pick up the tempo. We made their system look good, but it's not that intricate of a defense to break down. We are having trouble getting to the pace we need to be at. I didn’t like our ball movement all night. Our football team could've scored more points.”

Also, there was this quote about Oregon’s pregame meal: “There are a lot of areas to work on, all the way from the pregame meal — the spaghetti was overcooked — to our set offense. Our ball movement is not where it needs to be.”

Geraghty spoke with Virginia team officials Monday, and Cavaliers Coach Tony Bennett said he understood the situation, according to a Virginia team spokesman. Geraghty offered to put Altman in touch with Bennett, but Bennett said that wasn’t necessary.

Geraghty called the incident “incredibly unfortunate.”

Updated at 4:55 p.m.: Geraghty just emailed me Altman’s actual postgame quotes from Sunday night. Here they are ...

Opening Statement: “I am disappointed. We were out rebounded by 14 and then the free throw numbers didn’t give us an opportunity. There are a lot of areas to work on. Our ball movement is not where it needs to be.”

On the tempo: “We have to pick up the tempo. We are having trouble getting to the pace we need to be at. I didn’t like our ball movement all night.”

On rebounding: “I thought we would be a better rebounding team than a year ago with Tony (Woods) and Olu (Ashaolu) but we just aren’t right now.”

On the loss: “We got to the rim but we just didn’t finish. We had some shots go in and out that we just should have knocked down.”

On Devoe Joseph: “Devoe has been great. He is a big addition to our team. He had a big first half and kept our team in the game. He is a good basketball player.”
