Virginia will not participate in postseason play

The Virginia men’s basketball season came to a close Sunday when the Cavaliers were not selected for the National Invitation Tournament. According to a press release issued by the schhol’s athletic department, Virginia’s athletic administration, after consulting with coach Tony Bennett, had decided to remove Virginia from further postseason tournament consideration if the Cavaliers were not included in the NIT field.

Virginia, which finished the 2010-11 campaign 16-15 overall and 7-9 in conference play, was not one of the three ACC teams that earned NIT berths. Those teams were Boston College, Virginia Tech and Miami.

After finishing the regular season in a tie for seventh place in the conference, Virginia fell to Miami in overtime, 69-62, Thursday in the first round of the ACC tournament in Greensboro, N.C.
