Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd to co-star in rom-com parody ‘They Came Together’

Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd are set to co-star in a rom-com parody titled “They Came Together” directed by their “Wet Hot American Summer” friend David Wain, Variety reports.

Based on Variety’s piece, the plot sounds very much like “You’ve Got Mail” minus the AOL instant messaging, as other outlets have pointed out. Rudd is a corporate guy trying to shut down Poehler’s “knick-knack store,” but of course the two fall for one another. As much as I loved watching Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan’s romance bloom over dial-up in a very predictable manner, this film is mercifully meant to poke fun at hackneyed romantic comedy plot devices.

The group did a table read of the script, co-written by Wain and Michael Showalter, at San Francisco Sketchfest earlier this year, as Variety noted. There’s video from the event, but it’s hard to make out the dialogue over the audience’s giggles.

Rudd, who starred in Wain’s 2012 film “Wanderlust,” is currently playing Poehler’s city council opponent Bobby Newport on “Parks and Recreation.” In an interview with Celebritology’s Jen Chaney, Poehler said Rudd had “been so awesome playing this kind of, you know, empty suit, this guy who doesn’t even want the job but his dad wants him to have something to do during the day. But who’s very, very charming and very likable.”

The only bad news here? We may have to wait even longer for the promised “Wet Hot American Summer” sequel.
