Indie mopester Ben Gibbard of the band Death Cab for Cutie and manic pixie dream girl actress Zooey Deschanel are getting a divorce after two years of marriage. A statement from their reps say their parting is “mutual and amicable, ” which means that Gibbard will be denied a perfectly good opportunity to get over his split by listening to his own breakup music.
The pain! The heartbreak! The side-swept bangs! Just because Gibbard won't need it, there's no reason why the rest of us mourning the end of another Hollywood marriage can't indulge in some melancholia. Here's a Zooey-Ben breakup playlist:
There's times I think of leaving
But it's something I'll never do
'Cause you can do better than me
But I can't do better than you
Cause I built you a home in my heart,
With rotten wood, it decayed from the start.
Cause you can't find nothing at all,
If there was nothing there all along.
We're not the same, dear, as we used to be.
The seasons have changed and so have we.
There was little we could say, and even less we could do
To stop the ice from getting thinner under me and you.
We bury our love in the wintery grave
A lump in the snow was all that remained.
But we stayed by its side as the days turned to weeks
And the ice kept getting thinner with every word that we'd speak.
You'll be loved you'll be loved
Like you never have known
The memories of me
Will seem more like bad dreams
Just a series of blurs
Like I never occurred
Someday you will be loved
I can't keep up
'Cause you're so far gone
And it's all too much hindsight
Three wasted years, wasting time
And for good measure, some breakup lyrics from She & Him, Deschanel’s band:
Cried all night 'til there was nothing more
What use am I as a heap on the floor?
Heaving devotion but it's just no good
Taking it hard just like you knew I would
Old habits die hard
When you've got
When you've got a sentimental heart
Piece of the puzzle you're my missing part
Oh, what can you do with a sentimental heart?
