Britney Spears turns 30: A timeline of her tabloid life

Britney Spears turns 30 today, a big milestone for the bonafide superstar.

From Mouseketeer to pop princess, to troubled star and back again, Spears has made a pretty remarkable comeback recently considering she was whacking cars with umbrellas just four years ago. So in honor of the pop star, here’s a look back at her time in the spotlight thus far.

1981-2000: Oh, the good old days. Spears got her start on “The Mickey Mouse Club” and cut her first album, “... Baby One More Time,” before she was 18.

The beginning of the new millennium marked the release of “Oops! ... I Did It Again,” Spears’ second album which went platinum many times over.

The People cover seen in the image above on the far left, illustrates that innocent time, when Spears’s biggest issue was being considered “too sexy.”

2001-2002: A deal with Pepsi, a successful third album, Grammy nominations and the sexy “Slave 4 U” snake dance made 2001 a big year for Spears. But 2002 brought the end of the first Britney era, as she split from Justin Timberlake and took a break from music.

2003: Let the rebellion begin. This year was marked by the now infamous Britney-Madonna liplock at the MTV VMAs.

2004: A busy year for Spears’s love life. She wed her friend Jason Alexander in January and had the marriage annulled 55 hours later.

Months later, she became engaged to backup dancer Kevin Federline and married him in September.

2005: Spears’s first child, Sean Preston, was born in September. (See the People cover in the above image.)

2006: The couple welcomed their second child, Jayden, in September. They announced plans to divorce two months later.

2007: In the most significant sign of her decline, Spears was photographed shaving her own head in Los Angeles and attacking a car with an umbrella. (See a pic of her bald head in the top image.) She entered treatment shortly thereafter.

2008: Another dark year for Spears. She lost custody of her two children and then custody of herself, being placed in the conservatorship of her father James.

But in a sign that you can’t keep Spears down, the singer won three VMAs that year for her tabloid anthem, “Piece of Me.”

2009-2011: Spears has spent the past three years getting her life back in order. She’s currently dating her agent, Jason Trawick, and rumors are flying that the two are planning to get engaged. This past year, Spears toured on the release of her seventh album, “Femme Fatale.”
