Celebrity baby boom: A rundown of expected summer deliveries

As previously reported in this blog, Mariah Carey and
An expectant Natalie Portman at the Spirit Awards in February. (Alberto E. Rodriguez - GETTY IMAGES)
husband Nick Cannon recently became parents to newborn twins Monroe (a girl) and Moroccan (a boy). (And yes, those are their real names.)

Alicia Silverstone gave birth to a son last week. His name? Bear Blu. (Again, I must stress: These are actual names.)

Toni Collette, Jane Krakowski, Kevin James, Jay Mohr, Emma Bunton (a.k.a. Baby Spice) — within the past month, all of these celebrities have welcomed newborns into the world.

But that’s only the beginning of the Hollywood baby boom. In the coming weeks, even more famous people will either become parents for the first time or add to their broods. Keeping track of all the new arrivals is an overwhelming task for those who feel compelled to celebrate the births of children they will never know, to parents they admire from afar.

But this being Celebritology, I feel obligated to bring some sense of organization to the process. So here’s a partial rundown of the VIPs who are expecting this summer, when those children are expected to arrive and the odds of said kids getting saddled with a wacky name.

Note: Because most celebrities are reluctant to publicly announce their due dates, all projected arrivals are approximate.

Natalie Portman and choreographer/dancer Benjamin Millepied, Portman's fiance

Due date: Early summer

Sex of child: Unknown

Odds of baby having an unconventional name: Because this is Portman's first child, we have no precedent to go by. But gut instinct says the Oscar winner will opt for something interesting, though not off-the-wall.

Pink and her husband, motorbike racer Carey Hart

Due date: Early summer

Sex of child: Unknown

Odds of baby having an unconventional name: The pop-rocker’s real name is Alecia Beth Moore. But she goes by Pink. So odds look pretty good.

Jennifer Connelly and husband Paul Bettany

Due date: Early summer

Sex of child: Unknown

Odds of baby having an unconventional name: The happily married actors have a son named Stellan, while Connelly has son Kai from a previous relationship. A name that’s a bit out of the ordinary but not quite in Apple or Pilot Inspektor territory seems like a safe bet.

Kevin Federline and girlfriend Victoria Prince

Due date: Sometime this summer

Sex of child: Unknown

Odds of baby having an unconventional name: This is Prince’s first child. But Federline has two boys with ex-wife Britney Spears — Jayden and Preston — and two more kids — Kaleb and Kori — with ex-girlfriend Shar Jackson. Based on those names, it’s seems safe to at least predict that this child’s name will not be spelled in traditional fashion.

Jewel and rodeo champion husband Ty Murray

Due date: Summer

Sex of child: Boy

Odds of baby having an unconventional name: This is the couple’s first child. But if he doesn’t have a name that makes us believe he could grow up to own a ranch and/or win a Country Music Award, we’ll be disappointed.

Kate Hudson and boyfriend Matthew Bellamy, frontman for the band Muse

Due date: June/July time frame

Sex of child: Unknown

Odds of baby having an unconventional name: Middling to low. Ryder, the name Hudson and then-husband Chris Robinson gave their son back in 2004, sounded semi-unusual at the time. But compared with Bear Blu, it’s yawn-inducingly normal.

Victoria and David Beckham

Due date: Midsummer

Sex of child: Girl

Odds of baby having an unconventional name: Strong. The former Spice Girl and the soccer star have three boys: Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz. Nope, not a Michael or Jacob in the bunch.

Jessica Alba and husband Cash Warren

Due date: Late summer

Sex of child: Unknown

Odds of baby having an unconventional name: Alba and Warren have a daughter named Honor Marie. Fair to assume their second child will have a name that’s equally virtuous?

Alyssa Milano and husband David Bugliari

Due date: Late summer

Sex of child: Boy

Odds of baby having an unconventional name: Not sure. It seems 100 percent likely, however, that Twitter regular Milano will tweet his name to the masses immediately.

Tina Fey and husband Jeff Richmond

Due date: End of summer

Sex of child: Unknown

Odds of baby having an unconventional name: That’s a tough one. Fey’s daughter has the first name Alice (normal) but the middle name Zenobia (unconventional). So maybe 50-50?
