Channing Tatum, as expected, is People’s Sexiest Man Alive 2012

In perhaps the most anticlimactic reveal in Sexiest Man Alive history, Channing Tatum has officially been proclaimed the Sexiest Man Alive of 2012.

People made the announcement on its Web site moments ago and, in keeping with tradition, also shared it on this morning’s “Today” show. In non-keeping with tradition, Gossip Cop leaked the same announcement in an item published more than a week ago, sapping any element of surprise from the presentation of this year’s Major Award of Sexiness.

Nevertheless, anyone who saw Tatum shake his moneymaker in “Magic Mike” can understand why the 32-year-old actor — who also worked additional box office magic this year with both “21 Jump Street” and “The Vow” — was selected.

He’s a hot guy on a hot streak, who seems to humbly embrace his seductive qualities. He also once got exceedingly drunk while being profiled in GQ, which is another point in his favor. Even this blog had him on its short list of potential People SMAs of 2012 that was published almost two weeks ago, which I think makes me the Nate Silver of predicting trivial contests involving sexy male celebrities. Yeah, big day. Big day all around.

Do you agree with this selection? Are you bummed out that the Tatum choice leaked so far in advance that it seemed like a foregone conclusion? If you’re not pro-Tatum, whom would you have preferred that People chose? And, most importantly, will there be another protest because, once again, Ryan Gosling was overlooked for this high honor?

The comments section is all yours’. Feel free to crank up Ginuwine’s ”Pony” while you weigh in on this matter of vital importance to our democracy.
