The first preview for “Cloud Atlas” — a mammoth saga directed by the Wachowskis (“The Matrix”) and Tom Tykwer (“Run Lola Run”), and based on the equally mammoth novel by David Mitchell — arrived on the Apple Web site. And it is a lot to process.
It is five minutes long. It features an enormous cast, including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, James Broadbent, Susan Sarandon, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Ben Whishaw and Hugh Grant, among others. It implies the movie will tackle such small-scale themes as the meaning of life, death and human existence. And it features Hanks looking, at various times, like David Soul in ‘70s glasses (see above), his character in “Castaway” and, according to Gawker, John Travolta.
I see Gawker’s point. I do. But honestly, I think that goatee makes Hanks look more like R. Kelly.
Watch the clip on Apple’s Web site, then decide whether you agree that this looks like a sci-fi, time-shifting version of “Tree of Life.”
