Dick Clark dies: Watch ‘New Year’s Rockin’ Eve’ clips here (Video)

Legendary television host Dick Clark died Wednesday after suffering a heart attack. He was 82.

In addition to hosting “American Bandstand,” Clark was best known for his annual “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” celebration in Times Square. As the Post’s Becky Krystal noted in Clark’s obituary, “Mr. Clark had initially pitched the show as a hipper alternative to the long-standing broadcast tradition of airing Guy Lombardo’s big band playing ‘Auld Lang Syne’ from New York’s Waldorf-Astoria hotel.”

The special first aired on Dec. 31, 1972. After suffering a stroke in December 2004, Clark had TV personality Regis Philbin stand in for him. The next year, his heir apparent Ryan Seacrest joined him as co-host.

While his speech was forever affected by the stroke, Clark still did the countdown honor until 2012 — his 40th and final New Year’s Eve.

Watch video of Clark ringing in the New Year in each decade since 1972 below. Please share your memories in the comments.
