Eddie Murphy has risen from second place to first place on a just-released celebrity-focused list. Unfortunately for Eddie Murphy, that list is Forbes’s rundown of the most overpaid stars in Hollywood.
Last year, Axel Foley came in second place to Drew Barrymore on this annual tracking of actors receiving disproportionately high salaries, which is based on the box office intake of each star’s last three projects. Animated films are usually not factored in because they feature only a star’s voice.
For Murphy, that means his hat trick of tepid comedies — “Meet Dave,” “Tower Heist” and this year’s “A Thousand Words” — catapulted him to the top.
Following in line behind him in the overpaid queue, are, in order:
Katherine Heigl, a newcomer to this list of famous people with unjustifiable paychecks; Reese Witherspoon; Sandra Bullock (“All About Steve” brought down her average); Jack Black; Nicolas Cage; Adam Sandler; Denzel Washington (his films do fine, but he makes a lot, according to Forbes); Ben Stiller and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Barrymore — last year’s winner, if topping this list counts as a win, which it basically does because: still rich — is not included this year. But that’s not because she secretly appeared in disguise as a tribute in “The Hunger Games.” According to the magazine, she hasn’t made enough non-ensemble mega-flops in the past three to meet the requirements for ranking.
Don’t worry, Barrymore, maybe you’ll get ’em next year.
Also on last year’s list but missing from this year’s: Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.
