Ellie Kemper confirms engagement to Michael Koman with really funny pie story on ‘Conan’ (Video)

Ellie Kemper. (Matt Sayles - AP)
Bridesmaids” actress Ellie Kemper is engaged to her boyfriend of a few years, writer Michael Koman, she told Conan O’Brien in an interview Wednesday.

While Kemper, who plays secretary Erin on “The Office,” said her parents like her fiance “a lot,” her grandfather wasn’t always so sure about him.

Kemper said Koman, who was a writer on O’Brien’s “Late Night” for a number of years, was at her family’s home for Thanksgiving a few years ago when her grandfather — a “very tough man” — gave her future hubby the fifth degree about his life goals. Grandpa then gave Kemper a gentle lecture while having dessert:

“There was a pumpkin pie and a pecan pie out, and my grandpa said, 'Ellie, what kind of pie are you gonna have?' And I said, 'I don't know, grandpa. They both look really good. I think I'll have pecan.' He said, 'Are you sure, Ellie? Because it's okay to keep your options open. You don't have to settle on a pie right now. ... Who knows what other pies might present themselves?’”

Kemper gave her grandfather the benefit of the doubt, speculating that maybe he was just talking about pie. O’Brien was not convinced.

“I think your grandpa was talking about your fiance,” O’Brien said. “Who says, ‘Who knows what other pies will present themselves? You might meet a handsomer pie who’s heir to a pie fortune?’”
