Guy from Smash Mouth to smash eggs in mouth for charity

Steve Harwell of Smash Mouth in 2002. (REBECCA D'ANGELO/THE WASHINGTON POST)
Do you ever wonder what the lead singer from ’90s band Smash Mouth is up to? Well you should, because it’s better than you might think.

After noticing that the band’s Twitter account wasn’t getting much attention, Jon Hendren, a writer for comedy site Something Awful, challenged Smash Mouth’s lead singer, Steve Harwell, to eat 24 hard-boiled eggs for $20. Hendren was joined by many Twitter users in his call.

Surprisingly, Harwell said he would accept the challenge if those asking for the egg eating could raise $10,000 for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. So far, $7,382 has been raised on Causes.com.

Harwell’s choice of charity may come from a sad chapter of his life. In 2001, Harwell’s 6-month-old son Presley died of acute lymphatic leukemia. But now, because of the Internet, St. Jude’s is going to get a lot of money for cancer research. And the guy who sang “All Star” is going to eat a lot of eggs.

Win-win!

Here’s a song written solely to ask Smash Mouth to eat the eggs.
