On Sunday, the first gay marriages were celebrated in New York state. And now actress Heather Matarazzo can wed her longtime girlfriend, Caroline Murphy, as she’s planned to for many years.
Matarazzo, known for the films “Welcome to the Dollhouse” and “The Princess Diaries,” told the Associated Press, “My eyes and spirit have opened up since I found someone that I get to share my life with.”
Murphy, a recording artist, said that she didn’t get married on the historic day because she wants a wedding, “not a trip to City Hall.” The couple has been engaged for three years. They planned to wed in California, but Proposition 8, which eliminated the rights of same-sex couples to marry, stopped those plans.
In late June, New York became the sixth state, plus the District of Columbia, to legalize same-sex marriage. Neil Patrick Harris was one of the celebrities who celebrated the law’s passage on Twitter. He and his partner, David Burtka, announced they had been engaged for five years and planned to wed.
