Hillary Clinton turns down Jason Segel offer with light-hearted note

When Jason Segel visited Jimmy Fallon last week to promote his latest project, “The Five-Year Engagement,” he had just received an important piece of mail from Washington, D.C.: A rejection letter from Hillary Clinton.

The Muppets” actor explained to Fallon that when reporters ask him who the mysterious mother on “How I Met Your Mother” is, he replies Secretary of State Clinton. Segel also told Us Weekly in March he’d like to work with the politician on (the not real film) “Sarah Marshall 2: This Time It’s Personal,” saying “I just feel like she would be good at comedy.”

These were jokes, of course!

But, Segel claimed, he actually received a letter from Clinton turning him down. That, we now know thanks to Politico, was no joke.

Here’s what Clinton said:

I was delighted to read about your interest in sharing the big screen with me. As you can imagine, I am a little occupied at the moment, but perhaps someday I can help you forget Sarah Marshall ... again. My only condition is that there be Muppets involved, and that is non-negotiable. In the meantime, you have my best wishes for continued success with your career.

First the meme, and now this? Can the Secretary of State get any hipper?

Sadly, Segel has declared that he is through with the Muppets. Perhaps the chance to work with Clinton is enough for him to reconsider?

Watch Segel tell Fallon about the letter below.
