Kim Kardashian confirmed in a statement to E! that her 72-day marriage to athlete Kris Humphries is over, saying the decision to end the relationship was not an easy one.

“After careful consideration, I have decided to end my marriage,” the reality star said in a statement to E!. “I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision. I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don’t work out as planned. We remain friends and wish each other the best.”

Kardashian filed for divorce Monday, citing “irreconcilable differences” in court papers.

E!, the network that broadcast Kim’s two-part wedding extravaganza, released its own statement: “All of us at E! are surprised and saddened by this news, and we send our support to Kim and Kris at this difficult time.”

Humphries said he was “devastated” by the news in a statement to, you guessed it, E!.

“I love my wife and am devastated to learn she filed for divorce,” he said. “I’m committed to this marriage and everything this covenant represents. I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make it work.”
