‘Lawless’ trailer: Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy are bootlegger brothers

Even without knowing the plot of “Lawless,” it’s easy to get excited about the film based on its cast: Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce, Jessica Chastain and, in the lead role, Shia LaBeouf.

Based on the first trailer, released this week, I’d say their talents do not go to waste.

LaBeouf and Hardy star as bootlegger brothers, Jack and Forrest Bondurant, in depression-era Virginia. Jack makes a deal with a gangster, Floyd Banner (Gary Oldman), and then their operation starts to fall apart. Tommy guns blaze and chaos ensues.

“Lawless” was previously titled “The Wettest County” and should should not be confused with Terrence Malick’s “Lawless,” which stars Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara.

This “Lawless,” which will compete at Cannes, was directed by John Hillcoat and written by musician Nick Cave and Matt Bondurant. The latter scribe wrote the novel, “The Wettest County in the World,” based on his grandfather’s and granduncles’ bootlegging experiences.

Cave and Hillcoat worked together on 2005’s “The Proposition,” which the Post’s Ann Hornaday called “audacious” and “unsettling.”

“Lawless” will be released in August. Take a look at the trailer and share your thoughts in the comments.
