Matt Damon and Michael Douglas to play lovers in Liberace biopic

Matt Damon is signed up for “Behind the Candelabra.” (Evan Agostini - Associated Press)
Michael Douglas and Matt Damon have been cast in a Liberace biopic that will air on HBO.

Douglas will play the flamboyant pianist, and Damon will take on the role of Scott Thorson, Liberace’s younger, live-in lover, reports the Hollywood Reporter. The movie, “Behind the Candelabra,” is based on Thorson’s book about his relationship with Liberace and is slated to begin production next summer, with Steven Soderbergh directing.

The announcement solidifies a plan by Soderbergh — making a Liberace film with Douglas and Damon — that has been in the works for years.

The project marks the first time the actors will work together, though both have experience with Soderbergh. The filmmaker directed Douglas in “Traffic” and has teamed up with Damon on the “Ocean’s” films, “The Informant!” and “Contagion.”
