MTV Movie Awards: Fashion superlatives

The MTV Movie Awards does not function as a couture fashion show in the same wayother trophy ceremonies do. At this decidedly less serious event, the skirts are shorter, the attitude is looser and the overall vibe is much less formal.

Still, the celebs do walk a red carpet. And when photographs are taken on a red carpet, fashion assessments must be made.

With that in mind, here are some of the fashion superlatives from this year’s MTV Movie Awards, as determined by me, someone who came to work today wearing a button-down over an E.T. T-shirt. So, you know, clearly an expert.

Peruse the images then post a comment to weigh in on who you thought looked lovely as well as lackluster.

More bizarre MTV Movie Award moments

The Movie Awards: Live blogged)

Most effortless: Reese Witherspoon

The hair may be a little too wind-swept, but otherwise, Witherspoon looks just right — tasteful but with a dash of edginess — in this form-fitting and flattering cheetah-print dress.

Most unfortunate choice of shoes: Amanda Bynes

It was nice to see Bynes on the red carpet and clearly out of that short-lived retirement from last year. But these overly fringey heels ruined her look, and the purse didn’t help matters. Contrary to snarky comments on Twitter, however, Bynes does not look fat. In fact, if this qualifies as fat, then the child obesity problem in America has officially been solved.

Best use of safety pins: Kristen Stewart

Those are indeed safety pins all over Stewart’s mini-dress, suggesting the “Twilight” star still has some residual Joan Jett in her from her experience making “The Runaways.”

Most subtle cleavage: Nicki Minaj

Yes, that was meant to be sarcastic. Hey, eyes up here when I’m being a smart aleck.

Most rockin’ couple: Dave Grohl and wife Jordyn Blum Grohl

All black, and all tough guy stare from the frontman for the Foo Fighters. There goes my hero indeed.

Excessive use of stripes: Aimee Teagarden

I like the shape of this dress, but the colors didn’t quite flatter the darling Teagarden, who we all know and love as Julie Taylor, destroyer of mailboxes on “Friday Night Lights.”

Worst use of a rope belt: Bryce Dallas Howard

The soft blush and darker pink colors in this outfit flatter the red-headed and expectant actress. I just wish she had gone with a different belt. That ropey one looks like a tie snagged hastily from a set of drapes and thrown across her belly.

Making two mismatched things somehow work: Blake Lively

Lively looks great in this bright blue cut-out dress. And I like the purple pumps, too. Ordinarily, these two things would not seem to go together, but somehow the “Green Lantern” star makes them work. Added bonus: no evidence of an iPhone anywhere.

Most chic: Emma Watson

The fringy shoulders wouldn’t work on most people. But with her petite frame and shimmery silver shoes, this dress looked both glamorous and understated.

Best dressed overall: Emma Stone

With her hair now back to its strawberry roots, Stone looked pretty flawless in a Botegga Venetti dress with black lace and some underlying yellow and mahogany tones that complemented those locks perfectly.
