“The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” won five popcorn bucket trophies at the MTV Movie Awards, including one for best movie. (Yeah, on second thought, it really was better than “Inception,” “The Social Network” and “Black Swan.)
But as usual, the winners were not the important thing at the MTV Movie Awards. Far more significant were the bizarre, deliberately buzz-generating moments that occurred during the two-hour ceremony.
For those who didn’t have time to consume every live-blogged minute from the evening, here are the “highlights.”
Jason Sudeikis delivered an opening monologue that contained at least five Arnold Schwarzenegger jokes and a jab at Selena Gomez. “You’ve been liplocked with that Bieber kid for like a month straight,” he said. “Listen, I just want you to be careful, okay. And the only reason I’m telling you that is because she’s alrady swallowed three of his baby teeth.” Gomez looked (or feigned) embarrassment, and for a brief moment the Twitter community seemed empathetic to her. The moment was very brief.
Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner kiss.
Because at least one same-gender celebrity pair is required to kiss at every MTV awards show. As a result of this moment, the war between Teams Edward and Jasob briefly reached a détente.
Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake get grabby. In an effort to demonstrate that they aren’t dating despite starring in a movie called “Friends With Benefits,” Kunis and Timberlake demonstrated that they can platonically grope each other on live television.
Robert Pattinson struggles to find the right words to express ... anything. In addition to his less than elegant tribute to Reese Witherspoon, Pattinson seemed to have trouble expressing himself after winning in the best fight category as well. In an attempt to make a joke, he looked at the expectant Bryce Dallas Howard and, referring to their battle in “Twilght: Eclipse,” declared, “I ripped your head off, and now you’re pregnant.” Cut to Kristen Stewart looking confused/mortified.
Reese Witherspoon accepts MTV Generation Award and insists that being good is cool. She also suggests that sex tapes should be embarrassing and, without mentioning names, that Blake Lively should probably hide her face next time she (allegedly) takes nude photos of herself with an iPhone.
Young Alexys Nycole Sanchez accepts award for best movie line. Her innocence reminds everyone present to feel ashamed for all the suggestive and inappropriate things they said/did during the previous hour or so of the MTV Movie Awards show.
Gary Busey presents the award for best movie ... in a hamster ball. Just because.
