Olympian Gabby Douglas flips for Alicia Keys, Nicki Minaj at the VMAs

Olympian Gabby Douglas’s gold-medal tour has taken her to the “Tonight Show,” the Democratic National Convention, and now, straight to the golden tresses of Nicki Minaj. Douglas emerged as the previously hyped special guest during an Alicia Keys/Nicki Minaj performance of “Girl On Fire” (Katniss Everdeen, anyone?) at the MTV Video Music Awards. Thursday night. It was a moment that allowed her to again show off her tumbling skills, but this time on the same Staples Center stage that hosted Lil’ Wayne and Frank Ocean earlier in the evening.

Douglas hit the red carpet in a sparkly striped dress before announcing the Keys performance with the rest of the 2012 Olympics Fab Five gymnastics squad. Then she joined Keys and Minaj to do flips in leather leggings, briefly causing her shirt to flip up in a very minor wardrobe malfunction ) and eliciting a huge round of applause.

The entire performance, for Minaj, was surprisingly understated. You’ll recallthis is the same woman who, seven months ago at the Grammy Awards, incited the wrath of the Catholic League for her on-stage exorcism.

As for Douglas, her reign as America’s Sweetheart continues — and no one’s picking on her hair anymore.
