Phillip Phillips, ‘American Idol’ winner, undergoes surgery

Phillip Phillips (Mario Anzuoni - Reuters)
Phillip Phillips, the fantastically named latest “guy-with-a-guitar” winner of “American Idol,” underwent kidney surgery Wednesday, his rep told E! News.

TMZ, the first outlet to report the news, said Phillips had kidney stones removed during the over six hour surgery Wednesday. His rep said the procedure “went well.”

The singer battled kidney troubles throughout his run on the Fox show and considered dropping out at one point.

Despite his health problems, Phillips is still set to tour with his fellow “American Idol” contestants beginning in July. On Tuesday he tweeted, “Ready to start jammin with the band on tour!”

Judging by the over 29,000 likes on his recent Facebook update about the tour and his album, I’d say the fans are ready too.
