Oprah Winfrey recently traveled to Barbados to have a sit-down with Rihanna in what, based on a clip from the interview, appears to be a villa very similar to the one occupied by Angela Bassett in “How Stella Got Her Groove Back.” (Look at the water behind them. It’s so ... aquamarine.)
Actually, the just-released video (see above) isn’t a breezy conversation by the sea. It shows us one minute and 19 seconds of Rihanna discussing the aftermath of her 2009 assault by ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, with tears in her eyes and, arguably, more raw emotion than she displayed when she first discussed the sad episode with Diane Sawyer a few months after it happened.
“I lost my best friend,” she tells Winfrey. “Everything I knew switched. Switched in a night.”
“I felt like the only person they hate right now is him,” the pop star continues. “It was a very confusing space to be in, because as angry as I was — angry, hurt, betrayed — I just felt like he made that mistake because he needed help and who’s going to help him? Nobody’s going to say he needs help. Everybody’s going to say he’s a monster without looking at the source. I was more concerned about him.”
Winfrey, naturally, promises that the entire interview, which airs Sunday night on “Oprah’s Next Chapter,” is a “really, really get-down” conversation. I can promise that Rihanna’s frank comments will spark an interesting conversation on Twitter once more people watch the clip.
