Kidman in “The Paperboy.”

The Screen Actors Guild Award nominations were announced Wednesday morning in Los Angeles. And among those nominees stands a suggestively-dressed, sexually charged Nicole Kidman.
Kidman was nominated as best female actor in a supporting role in a motion picture for her work in “The Paperboy.” Yes, that is the movie in which she urinates on Zac Efron. And yes, that nomination may have been the one true surprise among a field of contenders most saw coming several Hollywood blocks away.
The movies that landed the most nominations — “Lincoln,” “Silver Linings Playbook” and “Les Miserables,” each with four out of the six film-related categories — have been widely praised for their performances, which is the guild awards’ focus. That's why “Zero Dark Thirty” walked away Wednesday with just one nod, for Jessica Chastain as lead female actor. That film is being celebrated more as a triumph of filmmaking than across-the-board ensemble acting even though the cast is uniformly strong.
But back to that Kidman/“Paperboy” nomination, which was, at least in this writer’s view, an unexpected but not an undeserved one.

“The Paperboy”may have been, as previously established, a nonstop parade of retro-noir, breaded-and-fried weirdness. But it was a movie in which Kidman demonstrated full, compelling commitment to her role as an insecure, screwed-up seductress who has unashamed telepathic sex with John Cusack. The fact that her colleagues chose to salute her for doing so allowed the Aussie star to join the very British Dame Maggie Smith as one of this year’s dual film/television SAG nominees. Kidman also was nominated for best actress in a TV movie for “Hemingway & Gellhorn,” while Smith received nods for her convincingly judgmental work on “Downton Abbey” and in “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” Both “Downton” and “Marigold” were recognized in their respective ensemble categories as well.
Before sharing the complete list of nominations, a few snubs also must be noted.
— Joaquin Phoenix was not nominated for “The Master.” It appears he was edged out by Denzel Washington in “Flight” and/or Bradley Cooper in “Silver Linings Playbook.” Whether this snub occurred because of Phoenix’s candid comments about awards season we may never know. Either way, everyone is probably going to lose to Daniel Day-Lewis in ”Lincoln,” so it’s all sort of moot.
— On the TV side, the comedy ensemble category swelled from five to six nominees due to a nomination tie. But “Parks and Recreation” still wasn’t in the mix. Both “Glee” and “The Office,” however, were.
— No McConaughey?!?!
Here’s the full list of SAG Award nominees. The awards will be presented Jan. 27, in a ceremony that airs live on TNT and TBS.
