The 2012 MTV VMAs: Fashion hits and misses

It was a rather snooze-worthy MTV Video Music Awards, but at least some of the celebrities in attendance made up for it with some stunning red-carpet looks. Stunning in a bad way, too, in the case of the guy who showed up in a pink leotard and full-length beard. Take a look at some of the hits and misses from Thursday night’s awards show.

In a classic J. Mendel white suit, she’s channeling Diane Keaton, a bit. Her style has evolved — remember when she used to wear a sparkly dress to every awards ceremony? It’s nice to see her try something new with this feminine take on menswear.

Rihanna

Another winning head-to-toe white ensemble once again repudiates the Labor Day rule. Rihanna’s gown was elegant in its minimalism — she barely even wore jewelry.

Stand them next to each other, and they’d look like sisters. Will this start a new mohawk-pompadour trend?

The Fab Five

The gymnasts look fresh-faced and dressed for their age. Maroney’s ballerina-inspired frock and Douglas’s sequins and stripes are the standouts here.
