The ‘Dark Knight Rises’ trailer is much funnier with only Pee-Wee Herman’s voice

Pee-Wee Herman at last year’s Comic-Con, prior to playing every character in “The Dark Knight Rises.” (Gregory Bull - AP)

It’s not clear why Pee-Wee Herman, a.k.a. Paul Reubens, wasn’t cast as Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises.” Filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s judgment has been consistently strong and everything, but still: For quite some time, this has seemed like a bad call.

Well now that matter has been partly rectified courtesy of a new version of “The Dark Knight Rises” trailer — as shared on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” — in which Herman’s voice utters all the dialogue.

Let me tell you this: When Herman-as-Bane warns Batman that “your punishment must be more severe,” it will give you chills.

Also, it may make you wish that Warner Bros. would release an alternate, all-Paul-Reubens-audio version of the movie.

Enjoy the silliness below.
