‘The Dictator’ trailer: Sacha Baron Cohen rules, tells Kardashian jokes (Video)

Sacha Baron Cohen (Peter Kramer - Associated Press)
In “The Dictator,” Sacha Baron Cohen plays a Middle Eastern ruler, ala Moammar Gaddafi, who is exiled to America, where he meets, then romances, an organic grocery store owner (Anna Farris). The first trailer for the film, written by Baron Cohen and directed by his “Borat”/“Bruno” partner Larry Charles, focuses on introducing the utterly ridiculous, heavily bearded General Aladeen.

The film, loosely based on “Zabibah and the King,”a novel believed to be written by Saddam Hussein, seems destined to cause controversy. John C. Reilly cracks a terrorism joke that involves the Empire State Building; Aladeen calls America “the birthplace of AIDS.”

But for some reason, the trailer doesn’t feel consistently edgy or shocking. Maybe it’s because of the scene with Megan Fox, playing a version of herself that accepts jewels as payment for sex. “What’s this? A ruby? Is that a joke? What am I, a Kardashian?” she asks.

“No of course not, you’re much less hairy” Aladeen replies.

Watch the trailer below, and share your thoughts in the comments.
