The new ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ trailer: Enough of a Peter Parker departure?

Andrew Garfield, preparing to sling webs. (Jaimie Trueblood - AP)

If you felt a nagging sense of melancholia because “The Amazing Spider-Man” was not featured among this year’s Super Bowl commercials, cheer up: you didn’t have to wait long for a new trailer.

A second preview for the Andrew Garfield-helmed Peter Parker reboot has been released online. It’s a promising sneak peek, full of all the things one would expect from a Spider-Man movie: grand shots of our red-and-blue-suited hero swooping through the city, close-ups of the concerned face of Parker’s love interest (this time, Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy) and the introduction of our villian (Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard).

In other words, it’s a decent trailer but one that’s still dogged by the same question that has hung over director Marc Webb’s take on the Spidey origin story from the moment it was announced: will it be different enough from the three Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire blockbusters that preceded it?

That’s still unclear. But what remains apparent is that Garfield should make an appealingly insecure everyman who happens to fight crime and slings webs in his spare time. Watch the clip below.
