The new ‘Great Gatsby’ trailer, featuring elements of Florence + the Machine and Fitzgerald

Perhaps you have concerns about the upcoming adaptation of “The Great Gatsby,” what with the release date being pushed from this year to next and the fact that the initial trailer implied that the roaring twenties featured the music of Kanye West and Jay-Z.

Adjust your worry, if you can, because a fresh trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s anachronistic take on the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel has arrived online, and I think there are several reasons to be excited about the movie.

For starters, let’s discuss the music.

The Kanye/Jay-Z track “No Church in the Wild” shows up again in preview No. 2., and so do “Bedroom Hymns” by Florence + the Machines and Filter’s cover of “Happy Together.” Purists may gasp and clutch their pearls and flapper hair-do’s over such “appalling choices,” but anyone who has seen Luhrmann’s ”Moulin Rouge” or “Romeo and Juliet” should trust his instincts on how to bring modern music to a romantic story set long before the dawn of hip-hop. Personally, I love this about his films. I mean, let’s not lie to ourselves. “Australia” would have been 80 times better with some Kanye in it.

As I noted after watching the first trailer, the visuals are just gorgeous. Every frame looks like a painting. And as weird it is to imagine “The Great Gatsby” in 3D, I actually want to see this in 3D.

And thirdly, after watching Leonardo DiCaprio sink his grimy weasel teeth into the role of Calvin Candie in “Django Unchained,” I can’t wait to see what he brings to Jay Gatsby.

Look, this whole crazy, post-modern, intense take on boats beating ceaselessly against the current may wind up being a failure. But with Luhrmann behind the camera, at worst, it should be a really thrilling failure. And at best, it could be something amazing.

When she isn’t at a movie theater or writing about movies, Jen Chaney is ... um ... probably at home, watching a movie.
