Tom Cruise is suing Life & Style magazine.

Bert Fields, Cruise’s attorney, has issued a news release confirming that Wednesday, the ”Jack Reacher” star filed a $50 million lawsuit against the celebrity magazine in Los Angeles’s U.S. District Court. Various media outlets reported the news, including the Hollywood Reporter.

The legal action was prompted by a Life & Style July 30 cover story that featured the headline, “Suri in Tears. Abandoned by Her Dad.”

“To say he has abandoned her is a vicious lie,” Fields said in his statement. “To say it in lurid headlines with a tearful picture of Suri is reprehensible.”

Cruise is no stranger to the process of taking legal action, but lately, he has avoided heading to the courthouse over unflattering news stories. Fields threatened to sue the National Enquirer in July over a cover spread that called the home Cruise once shared with ex-wife Katie Holmes and their daughter a “house of horrors.” The veteran attorney also publicly denounced the recent Vanity Fair piece about Cruise and his relationship with Scientology, but neither situation led to the filing of a lawsuit.

“He’s not a litigious guy,” Fields said of Cruise. “But when these sleaze peddlers try to make money with disgusting lies about his relationship with his child, you bet he's going to sue.”

When she isn’t at a movie theater or writing about movies, Jen Chaney is ... um ... probably at home, watching a movie.
